Finnish star Jari Kurri (top left) in an exhibition game vs. East Haven High School

Jari Kurri is probably best known for his time as Wayne Gretzky’s linemate during the Edmonton Oilers’ dominant run of four Stanley Cup titles in five seasons from 1984-1988. But during the 1975-1976 season, Kurri and his junior team played an exhibition game against the Yellowjackets from East Haven High School. (In the photo above, he is shown lined up at right wing as East Haven center Pete Torgerson squares up for a faceoff against his Jokerit teammate.)

Kurri would go on to play 17 seasons in the NHL with Edmonton, Los Angeles, New York (Rangers), Anaheim and Colorado. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Pete Torgerson went on to play hockey for Quinnipiac College and had a successful 25-year career as an NCAA hockey referee.

Special thanks to Greg Harney for sending in this great photo.
