The 1986 West Haven Blue Devils hockey team was coached by Connecticut coaching legend Art Crouse, who won more than 400 games, including five state titles. Crouse won a national coach of the year award in 1987 before retiring from coaching in 1988. He also coached on the collegiate level at the University of New Haven (1973-1976). As a player, Crouse played several seasons of professional minor league hockey before embarking on his coaching career.

His son, Marty Crouse, is currently the head coach at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, leading the Cadets to appearances in the division 3 (2009), division 2 (2010) and, most recently, division 1 Connecticut high school hockey state finals (2011).
