Some sad news today out of Russia: veteran NHL player/coach and former Hartford Whaler Brad McCrimmon perished today in a plane crash. McCrimmon, head coach of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, was travelling with the team when their plane crashed as it took off Wednesday afternoon, killing at least 43 people.
McCrimmon, an 18-year NHL veteran, played for the Whalers from 1993-1996. After retiring as a player in 1997, he spent several seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL (New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, Detroit Red Wings) before taking the head coaching position with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in May, 2011.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this terrible accident.
