6 4 Jon Gillies Goalie Indiana Ice (previously played for Salisbury School) South Portland, ME
33 32 Dawson Sprigings Goalie The Gunnery Toronto, Ontario
  • Not much movement here. Word on Jon Gillies is that he has narrowed his decision for next year down to either University of Notre Dame (NCAA) or the Quebec Remparts (QMJHL). One might venture to guess that where he lands in the NHL draft might dictate which way he goes with that decision.

Connecticut Pro Hockey Round-Up: 3/23/2012

New Canaan native Max Pacioretty currently leads the Montreal Canadiens in points with 58 (30g, 28a). This season, Pacioretty became the first American-born player to score 30 goals for Montreal. If he finishes the year as the team’s top point-getter, that will mark the first time since the 1935-1936 season that an American has led the Canadiens in scoring for a season. (That year, Leroy Goldsworthy of Two Harbors, MN led the Habs in scoring with a 15-11-26 line.)

The Danbury Whalers begin their Commissioner’s Cup final match-up against the New Jersey Outlaws this Saturday, 3/24/12.

Former Danbury Whaler Nick Niedert saw his first game action for the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) this past Saturday in a 4-3 OTL against the Reading Royals.

Great article on West Haven native Eric Boguniecki, who’s currently serving as an assistant coach for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Several college players with ties to the nutmeg state have also recently signed on with professional hockey teams:

Leitch, Newson lead Federals to win over Danbury Whalers

February 19, 2012 in Pro Hockey

Bill Newson (Enfield, CT) had two goals and former Quinnipiac standout Bryan Leitch added two assists as the Delaware Federals topped the Danbury Whalers 6-3 on Friday.

The Federals, with several local players on their roster, came back from a 3-1 deficit with 5 unanswered goals in the 3rd period. The biggest story of the game was Federals goaltender Dan Meyers, who made 62 saves in earning the victory for Delaware.

Former Quinnipiac keeper Peter Vetri stopped 26 shots in net for Danbury.

Local players set to face off against the Danbury Whalers this Friday

Mike Pomichter (left) and R.J. Gates (right) are among several local players to sign with the Delaware Generals (FHL).

When the Delaware Federals take the ice this Friday evening against the Danbury Whalers, there will be a decidedly nutmeg flavor to the team.

In advance of this week’s match-up, the Federals signed several local players to their roster – all with hockey ties to Connecticut. Among those signed were:

PLAYER POS. CONNECTICUT CONNECTION
Jason Szerszen G > All-State goalie for West Haven High School (1994)
Jim Demaio D > Former Guilford High School player
> Also played for the Danbury Mad Hatters (EPHL)
Greg Cassista F > All-State forward for Notre-Dame West Haven (2000, 2001)
> Attended Salisbury School
David Grimson F > Played Collegiately for Sacred Heart University
Mike Pomichter F > North Haven, CT native
> Former 2nd round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks (1991)
Bob Lachance F > Bristol, CT native
> Former 6th round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues (1992)
R.J. Gates F > Plainville, CT native
> Skated for New Haven Knights (UHL) and and Danbury Mad Hatters (EPHL)
Bryan Leitch F > Played collegiately for Quinnipiac University
> Finalist for the 2009 Hobey Baker Award
Andrew Meyer F > Played collegiately for Quinnipiac University
Jason Michelson F > Previously played for the Danbury Mad Hatters (EPHL)
Bill Newson F > Enfield, CT native
> Skated one season for Fermi High School (1992-93)
> Previously played for the New Haven Knights (UHL)

The backstory here is not uncommon on the well-traveled roads of minor league professional hockey: the Delaware Federals team was borne from the ashes of the Vermont Wild, a Federal Hockey League (FHL) expansion team that folded in December. In order to allow the remaining teams in the league to keep their scheduled home games (and the potential revenue associated with them), the FHL formed the Federals as a road-only team – meaning they play no home games.

The team itself was comprised initially of former Vermont Wild players. To help round out the roster for each game, the Federals sign additional players local to their opponent that week.

Enter this week’s group of newly minted Federals.

“I am really excited to get this chance,” said North Haven native Mike Pomichter. “The hockey community is such a unique, tight group. Many of us playing in the game grew up in Connecticut or played here in college or pro. We have a great group of players and I really look forward to this opportunity. To be able to get one more chance to be able to play in front of all my family and friends, is something you can’t ignore.”

Pomichter’s sentiments were echoed by Plainville’s R.J. Gates: “There are only so many times you get to relive your childhood dream of playing professional hockey. Many of us have families of our own now. So for me, it is about being able to play in front of my two boys, it is a special opportunity and you don’t pass those types of opportunities up.”

The puck drops in Danbury this Friday (2/17) at 7:35PM for what is sure to be an entertaining and memorable game for both players and fans alike.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. Get out and support local hockey!

Letting your politics get in the way of your puck

January 28, 2012 in Pro Hockey

Tim Thomas in his pre-political days at UVM

Why is it that so many professional sports figures feel it necessary wade out into the political end of the pool?

If you read any bit of hockey news this week, you’ve probably heard about how Boston Bruins’ goaltender Tim Thomas chose not to join the rest of his teammates at a White House reception celebrating their Stanley Cup championship.

In a statement released via Facebook, Thomas explained:

“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic.

TT

Ugh.  Say it ain’t so, Timmy.

First and foremost, let’s remember one thing: at the end of the day, you’re a professional athlete not a freedom fighter. All talk of “free speech” and “rights as an American” aside, bailing on your teammates when the team is being honored, not just you, is disrespectful.

Second, if you’re going to take a stance, own it. Don’t take the wet blanket approach of “I hate everything”.  This is clearly about politics, so 1.) own up to it and 2.) be prepared for the backlash.

Lastly, I actually want to caveat all of this by saying that I have been a huge Tim Thomas fan for a long time – dating back to his underdog days at the University of Vermont.  That’s probably why this whole incident bothers me. Growing up a hockey player and fan in New England, it was hard not to root for the scrappy, underappreciated – and, well, damn good – UVM hockey teams of the mid-1990’s. Tim Thomas’ road to the NHL, in my opinion, represents one of the best examples in pro sports of how hard work and determination can pay off.  He should be the model for every little kid with a big dream. Here’s the thing, though:  his followers – hockey fans young and old – don’t care about his political agenda.  They just want him to make some big saves, sign some autographs and be a hero.  Last time I checked, railing against the government doesn’t fall into any of those categories…

Howard Baldwin wants $105 million

November 17, 2011 in Pro Hockey

XL Center Rendering (Courtesy Of Connecticut Whale)

This past Tuesday, Howard Baldwin took one step closer (theoretically) toward bringing the NHL back to Hartford when he unveiled his $105 million plan for redeveloping the Mall, er, the XL Center in Hartford.

The redevelopment plan, designed to have the arena ready to house an NHL team by 2017, includes provisions for:

  • $17.6 million for a food court, open market and concession upgrades
  • $14.3 million for seating enhancements, luxury boxes, etc.
  • $13 million for facilities upgrades, restrooms, locker room, etc.
  • $4 million for a Hard Rock Café or Planet Hollywood
  • $5.5 million for IMAX
  • $3 million for Geno Auriemma’s Fast Break sports restaurant
  • $1.5 million for a Fox studio
  • $1.5 million for a team store

Not bad. On the surface that price tag actually sounds fairly economical for a major sports arena. (Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center cost $321 million to build in 2008) However, let’s not lose sight of the real facts here: By 2017, the building will be 42 years old – making it the fourth oldest barn in the league behind Rexall Place (1974), Nassau Coliseum (1972) and MSG (1968). At that point it will probably be closer to seeing a wrecking ball than an NHL team. Even with a fancy facelift, you’re probably just delaying the inevitable.

As I’ve said before, I’d love to have the Whalers back. I really would. However, when you look past the sentiment and nostalgia, it really just doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of economic/financial sense. Then again, maybe I’ve just taken a few too many pucks to the dome…

Creative European Shootout Goal

September 30, 2011 in Pro Hockey

Shootout goal scored by Radoslav Bural of MSHK Prievidza (2nd division) in Slovakia. You can bet you’ll see this one attempted a few more times around the local rinks this year…
